Google to start penalising
non-responsive websites

Big changes are coming this April. Google has announced that it will start penalising websites that are not mobile friendly from the 21st of April. If your website is currently not mobile user friendly, you will lose your hard earned rankings and be pushed down the search results!

Why such a big change?

Many of you are probably thinking why is such a massive change coming into place? Surely Google must realise the impact that this could have for businesses? The impact is not lost on Google but they are dedicated to providing all of its users with the best high-quality search results.

The internet is being accessed every day through a wide range of devices, and increasingly through mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Statistics have shown that 58% of adults access the internet via a mobile device. Google has already taken note of this new ever-growing sector of internet users as stated here in 2013. As of writing, Google has already made life easier for mobile device users by showing users what websites are “mobile-friendly”.

Google has taken note of the rapid growth in mobile device users accessing the internet and has decided to adapt its services for this growing market. Research has shown that the number of people accessing the internet using a mobile phone has doubled from 24% in 2010 to 58% in 2014.

The change in April will be the biggest change in terms of mobile-responsiveness to date. The aim of this change is to ensure that ALL users regardless of their device get results that are high-quality and optimised for their device.

What exactly is a mobile-responsive website?

Have you ever visited a website on your mobile device where you couldn’t scroll down, load pages or videos properly? This is the definition of a non-responsive website which is what Google aims to penalise.

On the other hand, a responsive website is one that adapts to the website’s visitor device, and it will give all users an optimal website viewing experience.

If you visit our website on a mobile device, you will notice the design has become streamlined and smoother in comparison to accessing the website on a PC or laptop.
